The Electronic & Photonic Materials team conducts diverse research in semiconductor material development, characterization, and device applications. III-V compounds like GaAs, GaN, InP, and GaSb are crucial for advanced technologies due to their exceptional electronic and optical performance, enabling breakthroughs in high-speed electronics, photonic computing, telecommunications, military systems, and healthcare solutions. The Solid State Lighting and Energy Electronics Center(link is external) focuses particularly on blue laser technology for data storage and energy-efficient lighting. Additionally, the group has expanded its research scope to include silicon-based and alternative material microelectromechanical systems. Researchers have access to cutting-edge equipment for Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) and Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) growth techniques, complemented by the advanced fabrication resources of UCSB's Nanofabrication Facility.
