The Ph.D., or doctoral degree, is mainly designed for those pursuing careers in research and/or university-level instruction. It emphasizes advanced ECE subjects, developing research skills and scholarly writing abilities, and producing original contributions to an ECE field. Doctoral students complete rigorous coursework and produce a dissertation (also known as a thesis). Those newly enrolled in a doctoral program start as precandidates. The Ph.D. qualification process, usually finished within the initial two years, must be completed. Students advance to candidate status after fulfilling all requirements except the dissertation. Typically, students entering the ECE doctoral program with a bachelor's degree achieve candidacy by their third year and are advised to finish within five years. These students usually satisfy master's degree requirements during their studies, earning both the master's and Ph.D. degrees. A master's thesis remains optional.
Applicants complete a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or complete an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
