The University of California, Santa Barbara's Department of Black Studies has introduced a Black Studies Emphasis (BSE) option for doctoral candidates in Chicana/Chicano Studies, Communications, Education, English, Feminist Studies, Global Studies, History, Linguistics, and Political Science. Professors across these disciplines regularly collaborate, sharing academic viewpoints, initiating cross-disciplinary initiatives, and mentoring graduate scholars. This BSE program leverages UCSB's renowned expertise in Race Studies, Comparative Ethnicity, and African Diaspora studies, establishing the university as a pioneer in Black Studies and Social Justice education and research. Participants must complete five (5) specialized courses that foster a sophisticated comprehension of racial theory, teaching methodologies, and the examination of Black communities across local and international settings. The detailed BSE course requirements are provided in the document below.
