The Classics Department provides a doctoral program featuring comprehensive exploration of ancient Greek and Latin languages, literature, history, and culture, alongside research methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and career preparation. Students may choose to specialize in Ancient History or Literature & Theory. Our dynamic PhD community engages with diverse scholarly pursuits, spanning Greek drama, Roman historical studies, and contemporary Classical reception. Alumni establish rewarding careers in university teaching, educational leadership, secondary education, and beyond. We encourage applications from candidates holding either a bachelor's or master's degree in Classics or allied fields. Competitive applicants generally demonstrate at least four years of Greek and Latin study, including three years in their primary language.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Ph.D. program in Classics should have an undergraduate major or equivalent in Greek, Latin, or classics. Other students may be admitted if they demonstrate proficiency in ancient Greek and Latin, but they will be required to make up any deficiencies in their undergraduate training while completing the regular coursework.

TOEFL scores 550 Paper-Based Test (PBT), 80 Internet-Based Test (IBT) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Overall Band score of 7 or higher (if applicable).
