The PhD program in classics is designed for individuals seeking to conduct innovative research across the diverse discipline of classics, encompassing Greek, Latin, Semitic languages, ancient Mediterranean religions and myths, Mediterranean archaeology, classical philosophy, and literary works ranging from Homer to Plato, the Bible, and early Christian theologians. Participants receive instruction to teach languages and literature at collegiate institutions. Graduates often apply their expertise in fields like law, counseling, publishing, library sciences, grant writing, nonprofit work, and academic administration. The initial stage focuses on building comprehensive understanding of Greek and Roman literary traditions and history while establishing proficiency in reading Greek and Latin. Curriculum covers classical literature, historical studies, and composition in both languages. Accelerated reading courses equip students for sight-translation assessments in each language, required during this foundational phase.
The subsequent stage concentrates on specialized seminars applying linguistic expertise to analyze literary and historical texts. These courses examine particular writers, literary styles, and historical eras. Students must pass examinations on two authors or genres—one Greek and one Latin—during this period. Additionally, candidates are evaluated on their mastery of prescribed Greek and Latin reading materials.
