The UCSB Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry focuses on pioneering chemical and biochemical research while maintaining environmental and ethical responsibility, serving Santa Barbara County, California, and the global community. We aim to tackle humanity's most pressing 21st-century challenges, recognizing chemistry and biochemistry as central to these solutions. Our mission includes providing outstanding undergraduate, graduate, and community education, equipping students with the knowledge and motivation to confront these issues.
Our program thrives on collaborative research, supported by numerous interdisciplinary units such as the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL), California Nanosystems Institute (CNSI), Center for Bioengineering, Center for Polymers and Organic Solids (CPOS), Center for Energy Efficient Materials (CEEM), Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB), and the Institute for Energy Efficiency. To facilitate this work, the department houses advanced research equipment, including multiple NMR spectrometers, X-ray crystallography and mass spectrometry facilities, and materials characterization tools. Additional resources include a machine shop, glass shop, and two stockrooms.
