Philosophy explores fundamental questions that thoughtful individuals ponder, yet remain beyond the scope of empirical sciences: Is reality purely material? Are human actions predetermined or do we possess free will? Do universal ethical principles exist, or is morality simply a personal perspective? Must we always comply with laws? How can we validate our knowledge claims? What distinguishes rational from irrational thinking? What is the connection between language and reality?
Engaging with philosophy fosters precise, methodical thinking. The philosophy major strengthens analytical abilities, making it valuable for numerous professions requiring these skills or as broad liberal arts education. Two specialized tracks address distinct student goals while representing philosophy's dual focus: (1) The Core Philosophy concentration provides comprehensive philosophical training, ideal for developing reasoning skills or preparing for advanced study. (2) The Ethics and Public Policy concentration examines moral and legal challenges in society and professional ethics, tailored for future lawyers, public servants, healthcare professionals, and others.
