The Middle East Studies (MES) program offers a comprehensive perspective on the cultures, societies, and Islamic traditions of the Middle East and North Africa. We approach this region as a vital source for theoretical innovation and scholarly inquiry. As an MES student, you'll join an interdisciplinary research community focused on real-world contexts while exploring significant theoretical issues. Our faculty and students have earned recognition for outstanding work spanning diverse fields including History, Religious Studies, Anthropology, Film and Media Studies, Global Studies, Art History, Music, Political Science, Communication, and Sociology. STEM scholars also play a crucial role in our program's leadership and vision.
UCSB's Religious Studies Department stands apart from other California institutions in its distinctive approach. Its curriculum examines religion through multiple lenses: historical, cultural, artistic, literary, social, experiential, and philosophical. Both introductory and advanced courses—taught by nationally and internationally renowned faculty—explore global religious traditions and their intersections with politics, society, conflict, and daily experience. As the first and most extensive Religious Studies department in the UC system, we grant B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Our graduate program provides flexible degree options, including standalone M.A., combined M.A./Ph.D., and direct Ph.D. tracks.
