This 5-year combined B.A./M.A. program caters to UCSB undergraduates majoring in Chinese or Japanese who aim to continue their education at the master's level. It enables students to simultaneously pursue a bachelor's degree in Chinese or Japanese alongside a master's in East Asian Languages and Cultural Studies. While these degrees are typically completed separately (four years for the B.A. and two for the M.A.), this accelerated program lets students enhance their language skills while deepening their understanding of Chinese or Japanese studies through graduate-level coursework in their chosen specialization areas, guided by department faculty. Participation in an Education Abroad Program in their focus country is mandatory during the third year.
You are considered a freshman applicant if you have completed secondary school and have not enrolled at any college or university.
