Anthropology examines humanity from comprehensive perspectives: biological, sociocultural, and historical. Many UCSB undergraduates choose this major for the well-rounded liberal arts education it provides, regardless of whether they plan to pursue anthropology professionally. The curriculum also thoroughly prepares students aiming for careers in the field.
The anthropology program has three primary objectives: (1) equipping students for graduate studies in anthropology, (2) preparing them for careers in secondary education or social services, and (3) offering behavioral science foundations for students seeking broad knowledge in biological or social sciences.
Those fascinated by contemporary societies typically focus on cultural anthropology. Students drawn to human biology and evolutionary adaptations often select biological anthropology. Archaeology appeals to those interested in studying past civilizations through both cultural and biological lenses. For a comprehensive approach, students may opt for the general major without specialization.
