The UC San Diego Materials Science and Engineering Program operates as an interdisciplinary initiative, involving faculty from multiple departments. Participating departments include Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE), Physics, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), Structural Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), NanoEngineering, Chemistry, and Bioengineering. Program governance is managed by the Director in collaboration with an executive committee. This committee oversees all program aspects, such as student admissions, curriculum standards, graduate-level materials science courses offered by participating departments, instructional lab maintenance, seminar organization, specialized courses, adjunct faculty appointments, and other related administrative functions.

Qualification Requirements
Admission to the Materials Science and Engineering Program is in accordance with the general requirements of the graduate division, which requires at least a B.S. and or M.S. in some branch of engineering sciences, the physical sciences or mathematics, our average GPA of admitted students is 3.5, and three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to the academic or professional competence and to the depth of their interest in pursuing graduate study. The following are the University issued minimum TOEFL scores (they vary upon type of TOEFL test taken): PBT 550 CBT 213 IBT 80 IELTS Band 7.
Successful applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution in the United States or from a recognized university-level academic institution abroad and at least a B average (3.0 GPA) or its equivalent by the time they enroll.
