Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of Maine. As the sole institution in Maine providing Ph.D. and M.S. programs in chemistry, we take great pride in our academic offerings. Our faculty and graduate students conduct diverse research across chemistry disciplines. With smaller research groups, we foster close collaboration between students and professors. Numerous teams work on interdisciplinary projects, creating chances to partner with engineers, materials scientists, biologists, and education researchers.
Most graduate students join our Ph.D. program, with first-year students typically receiving teaching assistant positions. Research assistantships become available, generally by the second year. We ensure continuous financial support for all students maintaining satisfactory progress until degree completion.
Nanoscience and Materials
At the nanoscale, materials exhibit strikingly different properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Our research explores how microstructure influences material characteristics for various applications, including plastics, coatings, ceramics, catalysts, and biomedical implants. This highly interdisciplinary field employs advanced instrumentation for nanoscale imaging and material manipulation.
