The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is advancing its Medical Devices and Systems (MDS) Initiative, fostering partnerships between ECE and UCSD's medical sector. This multidisciplinary program draws upon faculty expertise across all electrical and computer engineering disciplines to innovate in medical technology. Our researchers are creating diagnostic tools for cancer detection, chronic and infectious disease identification, and clinical pathology through advanced imaging systems and algorithms. Additional focus areas include robotic-assisted surgery techniques and telemedicine applications using wireless sensor networks. The department maintains strong ties with biomedical leaders, benefiting from UCSD's top-ranked medical school and San Diego's thriving biotech sector. Through close collaboration with healthcare professionals, we've accelerated the transition of laboratory discoveries into clinical practice. The MDS Initiative represents a strategic priority for the department, aiming to deliver accessible, high-quality healthcare solutions globally.
