The Directing Program cultivates visionary directors who excel as innovative leaders in collaborative theater production. UCSD-trained directors craft powerful theatrical experiences that engage with modern American theater trends. They serve as inspiring figures who motivate creative teams to achieve excellence. Students in directing learn to balance concrete production objectives with exploratory artistic discovery. Our program emphasizes script interpretation, realizing narrative concepts, production workflow, and developing new works. Keeping audiences at the forefront, directors make refined decisions regarding artistic style and presentation to produce meaningful, contemporary theater.
We encourage submissions of preliminary concepts, research materials, developmental work, and completed projects. This allows us to evaluate your creative methodology. Scenic design submissions should incorporate model photographs. For finalized scenic designs, please provide floor plans along with performance photos/slides. Include any sketches from Rendering or Drawing courses, plus photographic examples of artwork across various mediums that showcase your unique artistic perspective.
