The Composition Program focuses on cultivating each student composer's unique talents within a vibrant, diverse setting, prioritizing close faculty-student collaboration. Faculty advisors work closely with students to identify their artistic objectives while enhancing their technical skills to achieve them. Our dynamic program frequently inspires students to reconsider and refine their creative aspirations.
New students start with a year-long seminar (led by rotating faculty composers each term) before progressing to individualized instruction. The composition community convenes twice yearly for intensive juries - after fall quarter of the first year and again following spring quarter. During these daylong sessions, each seminar participant presents their completed work through meticulously prepared performances that are both played and recorded.
