The department provides both M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs. Our graduate curriculum aims to help students comprehend various philosophical traditions while cultivating their own unique perspectives as philosophers. Established in 1963, UCSD's Philosophy Department has evolved into a nationally recognized program, delivering outstanding teaching and guidance for both graduate and undergraduate students. Our faculty members specialize in diverse research areas, with particular strengths in philosophy of science, ethics and political philosophy, history of philosophy, as well as epistemology and metaphysics. We actively promote interdisciplinary philosophical studies, allowing graduate students to engage in combined doctoral programs with the Science Studies Program and Cognitive Science Department. The department maintains strong collaborations with numerous campus departments and programs such as History, Classical Studies, Psychology, Political Science, and Biological Sciences. Our Ph.D. alumni have secured positions at prestigious institutions nationwide and internationally.
