Our PhD program encompasses all principal areas and historical eras of philosophical study. The department excels in epistemology, ethics, feminist philosophy, metaphysics, phenomenology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and social/political philosophy. Faculty members employ diverse approaches, including analytic, continental, historical, and pragmatic methodologies. Candidates must fulfill 47 credit hours of coursework along with additional requirements. Detailed degree specifications are available in our Rules and Procedures document. Admitted PhD students receive comprehensive five-year support, including a full stipend, tuition remission, and health coverage.
University Tuition Scholarships provide tuition assistance without service obligations. These awards typically combine with other graduate funding opportunities - such as University Fellowships, Teaching/Research Assistantships, Traineeships, and Teacher Training Awards - and generally include student health insurance benefits.
Qualified applicants with bachelor’s or comparable non-U.S. degrees are eligible for admission to the Graduate School. Applications from international students with three-year bachelor’s degrees will also be considered.
The minimum acceptable score on the paper-based TOEFL is 570, and for the Internet-based test, 88. Many programs, however, require a considerably higher level of proficiency.
For IELTS, the minimum acceptable score will vary by program. In many cases, a score of at least 7.0 is desirable.
