Marine Biology (MB) explores marine life forms and their interactions with the ocean's physical and chemical properties. Faculty specialize in diverse biological fields such as evolution, ecology, physiology, biochemistry, and genetics as they relate to marine species. At Scripps Institution of Oceanography, students can pursue graduate programs in Oceanography, Marine Biology, or Earth Sciences, focusing on one of three key areas: Climate-Ocean-Atmosphere Studies, Geosciences of Earth and Planets, or Ocean Biosciences. The program highlights cross-disciplinary approaches, urging students to enroll in courses across UC San Diego departments and engage in multifaceted research. Marine Chemical Biology (MCB) merges chemistry and biology, employing chemical and genetic methods to examine biological systems. Current MCB research primarily investigates marine microbial compounds and the biochemical mechanisms behind their formation.
