Academic programs are customized to meet each student's unique requirements, considering their educational background and research focus. While the path to degree completion follows a common structure, the initial year involves coursework, teaching assistantships, selecting faculty advisors, and initiating thesis projects. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate language proficiency through an exam. Starting with the first summer, the primary focus shifts to research, though students may enroll in specialized courses throughout their studies. The second year features a departmental evaluation comprising a written research proposal and its oral defense. By the third year, students qualify for doctoral candidacy by presenting and defending their dissertation topic, early results, and planned research direction. Later years concentrate on conducting thesis research and completing the dissertation, with most students earning their degree by the fifth year.
