Graduate students pursuing cancer biology research will collaborate with a distinguished team of scientists and physicians specializing in diverse adult and pediatric cancers, such as leukemia, brain tumors, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and colorectal cancer. Their investigations cover critical areas including cancer origins, advancement, spread, blood vessel formation, cancer stem cells, live imaging, treatment strategies, and medication development. A core philosophy driving their work involves employing advanced technologies and interdisciplinary methods to explore essential cancer biology questions while prioritizing real-world medical applications. This research framework fosters collaboration between scientific and clinical experts while exposing students to various aspects of oncology. The program maintains strong connections with multiple campus training initiatives.
Through the Cancer Biology Research Area, Biomedical Sciences Program participants gain exceptional access to leading-edge knowledge from internationally recognized cancer researchers at UC San Diego, the Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, and the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, all known for their collaborative approach.
