The M.S. program is a component of the BIG (Bioengineering Interdepartmental Graduate) initiative, designed for working professionals aiming to deepen their expertise across multiple bioengineering disciplines or for those holding biology degrees who want to strengthen their qualifications for careers in diverse biotechnology sectors.
Earning a Master of Science requires completing at least 36 quarter credits, typically achievable within three to four quarters of full-time enrollment. The program offers both thesis (Plan I) and non-thesis (Plan II, Comprehensive Examination) tracks. Candidates wishing to obtain an M.S. in Bioengineering concurrently with a Ph.D. in another field must obtain special approval. The standard completion timeframe for the MS degree is two years.

A bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution. The degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent in subject matter and scholarship to that offered by the University of California.
