The Crop and Soil Science department provides advanced degree programs, allowing students to specialize in diverse areas of soil science for both M.S. and Ph.D. qualifications. Students tailor their curriculum by selecting supplementary courses from fundamental sciences and related disciplines. Conducting independent research forms a core requirement for both master's and doctoral programs.
Every degree plan is customized through collaboration between the student and their advisory committee. Candidates select a primary advisor along with faculty representatives from their chosen specialization. Research expertise within the department spans multiple areas including soil productivity, nutrient optimization, watershed protection, erosion control, soil classification, landscape-soil relationships, soil formation processes, elemental cycling, environmental chemistry, ecosystem interactions, clay-organic complexes, cultivated land management, and woodland soil systems.
