The Plant Pathology graduate program at UC Riverside provides Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Pathology. UC Riverside's plant pathology research concentrates on five key domains: managing plant diseases, microbial genomics and genetics, interactions between hosts and pathogens, Nematology, and microbial ecology and evolutionary studies. The Ph.D. curriculum is customized to align with each student's objectives and research interests, combining structured coursework with independent research projects. Course selections are made in collaboration with the student's primary advisor or academic counselor, along with the graduate affairs committee overseeing the Ph.D. program. Beyond foundational topics like plant pathology or nematology, students may need to develop proficiency in supplementary disciplines such as biochemistry, entomology, or genetics, based on their chosen specialization.
Midway through their Ph.D. studies, students must prove they've acquired sufficient knowledge in core subjects and specialized focus areas through written and oral qualifying exams. Successful completion of these examinations is mandatory to advance to Ph.D. candidacy. Doctoral candidates will then develop a dissertation grounded in original research, guided by a selected dissertation committee. The program culminates with an oral defense of the dissertation and related subject matter before the committee.
