Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field that explores nervous systems across various scales, from molecular and cellular processes to whole-organism functions. This Program aims to equip students for careers in research, education, and scientific leadership. The curriculum covers essential Neuroscience principles through a core course sequence, provides hands-on research experience via required lab courses, and emphasizes original research contributions. Each student's graduate training is shaped by their faculty mentor, whose expertise guides the research projects toward degree completion. Students gain from a customized interdisciplinary approach, enhanced by access to faculty with diverse backgrounds—from chemistry to psychology—and their specialized lab facilities. Beyond technical training, the program introduces alternative neuroscience career paths through guest speakers and events, including biotechnology and science administration.
The Interdepartmental Ph.D Program in Neuroscience at UC Riverside offers rigorous graduate training for students from varied undergraduate disciplines who are passionate about nervous system research. Our 37 faculty members, representing departments such as Biology, Cell Biology & Neuroscience, Chemistry, Entomology, Psychology, and Biomedical Sciences, bring diverse expertise to the program.
A cornerstone of Neuroscience training involves mentored laboratory research, where students collaborate with faculty members. Prospective applicants are encouraged to connect with faculty whose research aligns with their interests.
