All Ph.D. candidates maintaining satisfactory academic progress receive complete financial support throughout their education. UCR's doctoral program aims to equip students with the theoretical foundation, hands-on research training, and career preparation needed to become accomplished, self-sufficient researchers. The curriculum focuses on building a strong chemical knowledge base that enables advanced analytical thinking and innovative problem-solving abilities. Since the Ph.D. is fundamentally a research-focused degree, selecting a research specialization and faculty mentor constitutes a primary objective during the initial graduate year. UCR offers diverse chemical research fields, and students are advised to explore multiple options before committing to an advisor. The program actively promotes cross-disciplinary studies and collaborative research initiatives. Prospective students may directly reach out to faculty members to learn about laboratory opportunities - contact details are available in the Faculty Profiles section. First-year students should ideally finalize their research group selection by January.
