Chemistry explores the composition and transformations of substances, categorized into analytical, environmental, inorganic, materials, organic, and physical branches. The Chemistry Department provides a B.S. program, with specialized tracks in Chemical Physics and Environmental Chemistry. These pathways fulfill the American Chemical Society's certification standards. A B.A. degree is also available, featuring fewer Chemistry courses and lighter Physics and Math prerequisites, making it ideal for premedical, dental, pharmaceutical, education, or administrative pursuits.

The Chemistry Department equips students with robust training for careers in chemistry and allied disciplines. The program is particularly beneficial for preprofessional students targeting graduate studies, medical school, or health-related fields.
A Chemistry degree lays the foundation for advanced studies in chemistry and related areas, while also serving as a strong base for medical, dental, or pharmacy programs. Graduates with a B.S. find opportunities across industries like petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. Flavor and fragrance chemists contribute to food, beverage, and consumer goods production. Materials science chemists innovate in functional and nanomaterial development. Public sector roles include air and water quality analysis, forensic science, and drug testing. Beyond labs, chemists thrive in sales, science communication, education, and patent law.
Numerous Chemistry students participate in research, often starting in their first year. They collaborate closely with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students on pioneering chemistry projects. UCR's Undergraduate Chemistry Club organizes social events, excursions, networking, and community outreach activities.
