UCLA's Medieval History program offers rigorous academic preparation with a focus on research methodologies, teaching, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Students gain from robust offerings in medieval Latin and various vernacular languages (including Celtic, English, French, German, Italian, Old Norse, Portuguese, Spanish, and Slavic), alongside complementary fields like art history, anthropology, and archaeology. Notably, the Ph.D. qualifying exam mandates a non-history concentration, reflecting our dedication to interdisciplinary medieval European studies.
The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (CMRS) at UCLA fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration by hosting distinguished visiting scholars, organizing lectures, workshops, conferences, and research initiatives. Competitive fellowships and research assistantships are available to graduate students through CMRS. Furthermore, the History Medieval program collaborates with the LAMAR (Late Antiquity, Medieval, and Renaissance) initiative, which provides annual interdisciplinary graduate seminars along with summer funding opportunities for medieval studies students.
