The UCLA Department of Art History provides a two-phase graduate program leading to a PhD. Admission is not offered for a standalone master's (MA) degree. The MA is conferred as part of the PhD requirements upon successful completion of the program's initial phase, usually after two years (six quarters) of study. The standard duration to earn a PhD is seven years from enrollment. For students entering with an existing MA, the typical timeframe is five years from admission.
All candidates must fulfill the department's MA requirements. The Graduate Review Committee may exempt these requirements during admission for students holding an MA in Art History or related field from another institution. In accordance with Academic Senate regulations on duplicate degrees, students entering with an MA in Art History from another university cannot obtain a second MA in Art History from UCLA.
An international student whose post-secondary education is completed outside of the U.S. is expected to hold a degree representing completion of at least four years of study with above average scholarship from a university or university-level institution.
