The UCLA Music Department provides Master of Music (M.M.) and Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) programs specializing in choral, orchestral, and wind ensemble conducting. As the sole California institution granting doctorates across all three disciplines, UCLA maintains intentionally small studios. This approach ensures podium time for students, close faculty guidance, and collaboration with fellow graduate conductors. Beyond individual and group conducting lessons, the curriculum includes essential coursework in music research, analysis, notation, and historical performance practice, while engaging students in the full spectrum of a top-tier university ensemble program.
Applicants to the Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) program are expected to hold a master's degree, or equivalent, in music. Other fields of study are accepted if the applicant has the musical training and musicianship necessary to pursue doctoral work. Transcripts must show an average grade of at least B in the basic areas that normally constitute the undergraduate core curriculum in music (harmony, counterpoint, music history, analysis, and musicianship) as well as all graduate study.
IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.
