Aerospace engineers are responsible for the conception, design, development, testing, and oversight of aerospace vehicle systems, including commercial and military aircraft, helicopters, rotorcraft, space vehicles, satellites, and launch systems. They find employment with aerospace firms, manufacturers of airframes and engines, governmental bodies like NASA, military branches, and R&D institutions.

As a high-technology field, the aerospace industry requires engineers to be proficient in applied mathematics and core engineering sciences, such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, dynamics and control, and structural and solid mechanics. The complexity of aerospace vehicles necessitates a multidisciplinary approach to their design and construction, incorporating aerodynamics, structural analysis and design, stability and control, aeroelasticity, performance analysis, and propulsion systems technology.

Aerospace engineers rely heavily on computer systems and software, requiring a basic understanding of modern electronics. They operate in a demanding, technically advanced professional environment, frequently at the cutting edge of scientific exploration, where they may inspire and contribute to the development of new scientific ideas.
