Established in 2020, the Department of European Languages and Transcultural Studies represents a forward-thinking academic initiative that consolidates the previous departments of French and Francophone Studies, Germanic Languages, Italian, and Scandinavian. The inclusion of "transcultural" in our title highlights our common European heritage while broadening our scope to incorporate viewpoints from creators and thinkers across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and beyond. This expanded approach enables a more focused, thorough examination of history and provides better context for Europe's global interactions.
Students pursuing the European Languages and Transcultural Studies major will achieve these educational objectives:
Attaining advanced competency in at least one department-offered language.
Developing expertise in an experimental humanities field (digital, environmental, medical, or urban).
Gaining comprehensive knowledge of European culture and history within worldwide frameworks.
Mastering critical analysis of literature and cinema.
Demonstrating exceptional communication abilities through both speech and writing.
