The UCLA English Department focuses on delivering a comprehensive liberal arts education, equipping students with essential reading, writing, and analytical abilities to thrive in modern society. The department provides diverse courses covering British, American, and Anglophone literary traditions and cultures. With more than seventy faculty members and a thousand enrolled majors, it fosters a dynamic environment for intellectual growth, discussion, and exploration. Students can pursue a specialization in creative writing within the major. Additionally, the department grants a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature and Culture and an English Minor.
Admission to creative writing workshops requires an application. Prior to each quarter, instructors distribute guidelines (accessible in 149 Kaplan Hall and online) detailing submission processes and deadlines for writing samples. Typically, submissions are due two to three weeks before the quarter starts. Applicants may apply to multiple workshops but must notify all instructors involved.
Workshop instructors will email acceptance notifications at the start of the quarter. Accepted students receive a PTE number on the first day of class to complete enrollment.
