Exploring English and American literature forms a core component of liberal arts education, offering valuable skills applicable across all career paths. English majors develop critical reading abilities and analytical writing techniques, equipping them to engage meaningfully with their cultural environment while cultivating a lasting, rewarding connection with literary works.
The program features two specialization paths: literature studies and creative writing. Coursework spans diverse historical eras, thematic subjects, and specialized domains (including literary history, theoretical criticism, and cultural contexts). Advanced research opportunities emerge through seminar courses, individualized study options, and an honors initiative requiring seniors to complete an academic thesis. Creative writing concentrators may develop original works in poetry, fiction, or mixed formats during their final year. Additionally, the department facilitates paid internship seminars for majors and minors, connecting them with publishing houses, literary journals, agencies, and related institutions.
