The Creative Writing program equips students with professional imaginative writing skills for publication. Through a sequence of writing workshops combined with literary history and analysis courses, students enhance their creative abilities across multiple genres. They establish a strong foundation in literary forms, cultivate critical and creative thinking about how authors depict everyday experiences, develop awareness of writing techniques and audience through in-depth style, voice, and genre exploration, and comprehend the criteria for evaluating literary works. The English major introduces students to diverse English-language literatures, reinforces their historical and critical knowledge, and sharpens their written communication abilities. English majors examine significant writers, texts, genres, and literary trends through both analytical and historical lenses. Creative Writing students additionally complete several workshops to practice composing in various literary styles. Both programs foster perceptive reading, effective writing, appreciation for language's influence, innovative and analytical thinking, and recognition of diverse perspectives.
