Students explore significant literary movements and genres across British, American, and global English literature, gaining insights into literature's multifaceted nature and its creation and global dissemination. The University of Iowa ranks as the nation's second-best institution for writing, per recent U.S. News & World Report rankings. Prestigious programs like the Iowa Writers' Workshop and Nonfiction Writing Program attract acclaimed authors to campus. In 2008, UNESCO designated Iowa City as the world's third City of Literature.
