An English major equips students with critical reading skills, creative thinking abilities, clear writing techniques, and effective communication methods. This program offers both a worldview perspective and a foundational knowledge base. Students complete a 12-credit core curriculum before choosing from four specialization tracks: Literature, Writing and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, or Linguistics. By engaging with important texts through reading, discussion, and writing, students develop stronger analytical skills for interpreting fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction while gaining cultural insights that broaden their personal experiences. FIU English graduates pursue diverse paths in fields like publishing, education, legal professions, technical writing, business management, IT, and advanced studies in English or related fields. The English major serves as excellent preparation for graduate programs in English or law school, as well as for any profession demanding strong writing and analytical abilities.
The Linguistics track provides instruction in language structure, variation, universal patterns, linguistic analysis, and sociolinguistics, preparing students for language-related careers, teaching positions, or advanced studies in Linguistics and similar fields.
