At the heart of the American Literature and Culture major lies the ongoing debate about what "America" truly represents. Though commonly equated with the United States, America encompasses numerous distinct identities, each engaging with the broader world in intricate ways. This major explores America through diverse lenses - from local and regional perspectives to global, interracial, multiethnic, and migratory contexts. Adopting an expansive definition of America, the program encourages critical reflection about our analytical approaches, underlying assumptions, and intellectual frameworks. Through this, American Literature and Culture highlights the rich tapestry of peoples, histories, and concepts that shape America - both as physical geography and cultural construct.

All courses counting toward the American Literature and Culture major requirements must carry 4 or 5 units and be completed for letter grades.
Students should select courses that align with their academic interests while building a cohesive literary studies curriculum when fulfilling major requirements.
