UCIrvine's lighting design program focuses on cultivating advanced students' abilities in the artistic and technical aspects of illumination. This specialized curriculum equips learners for professional opportunities in theater, entertainment events, concert productions, and architectural lighting environments.
Throughout the three-year graduate program, students receive comprehensive training that blends creative, practical, theoretical, digital, scientific, philosophical, and psychological dimensions of lighting. The diverse coursework helps shape versatile lighting professionals who can approach projects from multiple perspectives. This interdisciplinary approach enables students to investigate various lighting applications, helping them identify their specialization and pursue career paths aligned with their skills and passions.
The program offers equal emphasis on artistic vision and technical proficiency. Students study lighting composition, drafting methods, intelligent lighting systems, digital visualization tools, illumination history, architectural lighting concepts, presentation skills, lighting technology, system planning, and business operations. The curriculum also provides cutting-edge digital design instruction, covering 2D/3D modeling techniques, scenic and lighting visualization, and computerized light plot development.

Qualification Requirements
All graduate applications are submitted electronically and must be supported by appropriate academic transcripts from each college/university attended, three letters of recommendation, and resume. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted online with the graduate application. Official transcripts must be provided only after a candidate has been accepted by the program and formally admitted to the university. All letters of recommendation must be submitted online. Design portfolios should be uploaded to the electronic application, if the portfolio is available online, a link to the specific website should be uploaded.
For those international applicants that are required to take the TOEFL test to measure English language proficiency, a minimum score of 80 is considered passing. To be eligible to receive a teaching assistantship, a minimum score on the speaking portion of 26 is required.
