UC Irvine offers a stimulating and innovative setting for aspiring design students who are inquisitive and inventive. We foster a robust theatrical design foundation combined with digital exploration to cultivate distinctive and insightful artistic partners. A UC Irvine education equips designers with exceptional preparation for careers in theater and related performing arts.
New students concentrate on one specialized area: sound, lighting, costume, or scenic design. This focused study forms the core of their training. Students also gain fundamental knowledge across all design disciplines to enhance collaborative skills. The curriculum further incorporates theater history, art history, and dramatic literature studies.

Teaching emphasizes the development of each student's personal design strengths. Shared studio spaces encourage an environment of supportive feedback and creative exchange. Beyond standard coursework, supplementary learning occurs through weekly discussions, design workshops, expert-led sessions, and performance evaluations.
