UCI's dance program requires undergraduate majors to complete three quarters of dance history courses, exploring diverse dance styles while particularly highlighting ballet, modern, and contemporary concert forms. The curriculum aims to foster students' comprehension of dance's artistic development, its role in global contexts, and its significance in shaping individual and collective identities, as well as its potential for personal and societal empowerment. These courses equip aspiring dancers for careers in dance scholarship, criticism, education, performance, choreography, arts administration, and informed audience participation.
The introductory course, Dance 90A: Global Perspectives, examines themes like cultural identity and national dance institutions while studying specific global dance traditions. Recent curriculum has featured Indian classical dance, Native American dance forms, hula, African dance influences, and dance traditions from Spain, Korea, Latin America, the Middle East, and China.
