The University of Washington's Dance Department provides a Master of Fine Arts program designed to transition seasoned dance professionals into academic careers. This rigorous two-year curriculum assists M.F.A. students in: cultivating scholarly perspectives on their choreographic work, enhancing their artistic process, and transforming physical expertise into thoughtful teaching methodologies. Participants benefit from tuition coverage and receive a regular stipend while serving as Teaching Assistants within the Dance Department.
The program welcomes applicants boasting eight or more years of professional dance experience across all styles. While past cohorts have predominantly featured modern, contemporary, and ballet practitioners, the Department is implementing structural and faculty adjustments to broaden its scope beyond Western performance traditions, emphasizing greater inclusion of Afro-diasporic and social dance forms.
