While the graduate dance program primarily focuses on the Master of Fine Arts degree, all students initially enroll in the MA program. Transition to the MFA program happens in the third semester based on faculty recommendation to the Dean of Graduate Studies. MA coursework often parallels the MFA curriculum, supplemented by interdisciplinary studies in theater and other fields. Each student's academic plan is tailored by the core dance faculty. Both the School of Graduate Studies and Dance Department mandate a minimum 3.0 GPA, as set by Ohio's Department of Higher Education.
MA students need to fulfill at least 30 credit hours, typically following the outlined curriculum. The primary faculty advisor may adjust this plan as needed. The program follows Graduate Studies Plan B, which involves creating a non-performance thesis on a faculty-approved subject. This scholarly work should make meaningful contributions to dance studies, with possibilities for publication or conference presentation. Students must complete their thesis within one academic year after finishing course requirements.
