This course examines key topics in the dance community while developing skills in analytical writing and persuasive argumentation. It features a dedicated segment on dance criticism, exploring the critic's role and different approaches to dance-related writing. As an advanced writing course, it emphasizes improving writing proficiency through diverse assignments including event reviews, reading responses, and analytical essays. Titled Critical Issues in Dance, the curriculum highlights dance's cultural significance by addressing themes like sexuality, social justice, censorship, cultural identity, power structures, and gender representation. Participants engage with current dance topics through class presentations and written work analyzing both mainstream media and academic publications. The program fosters critical thinking through readings, performances, and dialogue, helping students develop their unique perspective in an art form dominated by physical expression. The course equips learners to critique dance professionally, advocate for dance education, analyze popular dance media, or effectively communicate dance's global relevance through various written formats.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for admission to the M.F.A. in Dance must meet the general requirements for admission to graduate studies and hold a B.A. or B.F.A. in Dance or the equivalent. A minimum undergraduate grade point average of at least a B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) is required. Admission to the Dance MFA is for Fall quarter only.
An interview with the faculty and an audition in dance technique and choreography are required. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the interview and audition will be held remotely this year.
The technique and choreography audition will be by video. The Graduate Application Packet includes the specific requirements and procedures for the technique and choreography video audition.
TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80
IELTS - An overall minimum score of 7.0 for admission, with a score of no less than 6.0 on any individual module.
Hold a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
GRE is NOT required
