Founded in 1974, the Master of Arts in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling prepares students for innovative, adaptable, and impactful therapeutic practice. This distinctive program blends the artistic and scientific aspects of dance/movement therapy. Graduate studies cultivate students' personal growth, creative expression, analytical skills, and movement capabilities, enabling them to establish therapeutic movement relationships that help clients access these same resources.
Dance/movement therapy involves using movement as a psychotherapeutic tool to promote emotional, cognitive, social, and physical well-being. The field is well-suited to address growing demand for mind-body approaches to health, which have gained popularity among healthcare professionals and the public alike.
Graduates pursue careers in diverse environments including educational institutions, early childhood programs, mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals, medical facilities, social service agencies, and wellness centers.
The 90-quarter-credit curriculum fulfills Pennsylvania's Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) educational standards. Please note that licensing regulations differ significantly across states and may be updated periodically. Prospective students seeking counseling licensure should carefully review the specific requirements for their intended practice locations. Students bear full responsibility for understanding all licensure prerequisites.
The 90-credit MA program typically requires two years (seven quarters) of full-time study, though some students may choose an extended timeline. Most courses are conducted in-person at Drexel's College of Nursing and Health Professions in Philadelphia's Center City, with certain classes available online.
