Students enrolled in the MAT Single Subject Program develop the expertise and obtain the certification needed to instruct a specific subject in middle or high school settings. At UCI, participants can select from six specialized teaching tracks: Art, English, Mathematics, Social Science, Sciences (including Life Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Planetary Sciences, or Physics), or World Languages (French, Mandarin, or Spanish).
The MAT Multiple Subject Program spans 14 months, commencing each year in late June and concluding the following July. Graduates earn both a master's degree and a teaching credential upon completion.
This program's curriculum, incorporating practical fieldwork, is structured around five fundamental principles: Content Area Instruction, Equity, Student Development and Learning, Practical Application, and Educational Leadership.
Participants gain skills in delivering inclusive education through specialized coursework on adapting instruction for diverse learners, including students with exceptional needs and English language learners. These academic components are complemented by hands-on classroom experiences where candidates collaborate with experienced teachers to create and deliver comprehensive curricula that meet all students' needs.
