Ethics plays a fundamental role across political landscapes. The ethics specialization within Political Science takes an expansive view, encompassing: (1) examining frameworks of moral values, (2) behavioral standards specific to professions or communities, such as biomedical ethics or religious ethics, (3) personal moral codes governing individual behavior and interpersonal dynamics, and (4) philosophical and social scientific inquiries into human behavior's moral dimensions, assessing the virtue of actions and their underlying intentions.
Students pursuing an Ethics concentration should enroll in the annual Spring Ethics workshop, complete three supplementary ethics courses, and focus one qualifying paper on ethical studies. With consent from both the instructor and Graduate Director, alternative courses may fulfill requirements. Undergraduate classes can count toward graduate credit through special topics codes, pending approval. Unless specified otherwise, all referenced courses and faculty belong to the Political Science department.
