The political economy and public policy concentration explores how political forces intersect with both governmental and private institutions to influence economic policy. Students pursuing this track examine key policy matters by studying how individual motivations and institutional frameworks guide decision-making and organizational dynamics. Alongside the core public policy course all students complete, this concentration offers specialized seminars in areas like policy assessment, bureaucratic operations, regulatory systems, institutional studies, and municipal governance. Faculty members have conducted studies on topics ranging from metropolitan economic growth to suburban political economies, oversight of regulatory agencies, and public reactions to taxation. Prospective students might participate in current research initiatives examining market-based approaches to education selection, EU subsidy distribution, social capital's impact on environmental policy, or state-level business regulations. This economic perspective also sheds light on political mechanisms including electoral behavior, party dynamics, and policy prioritization.
