The University of Kentucky boasts a renowned legacy in both academic research and educational excellence. Within this institution, the Political Science Department maintains a time-honored commitment to outstanding scholarship, impactful teaching, and preparing graduate students to emerge as prominent figures in their field. The graduate curriculum equips students with the skills to excel as both educators and researchers. Our recent graduates have secured prestigious positions at institutions including the University of Rhode Island, University of Nebraska-Kearney, University of South Carolina, and Auburn University. The Ph.D. program consists of two distinct phases: a foundational general phase followed by specialization. First-year students focus on the general phase, completing core methodology courses and proseminars across four primary political science disciplines. Those with prior graduate coursework may receive exemptions from certain requirements. After the initial year, a faculty committee assesses each student's progress to determine successful completion of the general phase.
