The History Graduate Program at UCI provides students with a vibrant academic environment characterized by its dedication to interdisciplinary conversations between faculty and students. These discussions focus on key research areas including: Transnational, colonial, and imperial studies; Global History; The history of science, technology, medicine, and the environment; Gender and sexuality studies; and Religious history. Through graduate seminars, students from diverse geographical and historical specialties come together to explore a unique educational approach that blends theoretical rigor with detailed analysis of primary sources like documents, texts, interviews, and artifacts. The History Department at UCI maintains an ideal balance—small enough for personalized attention yet sufficiently robust to foster a dynamic research culture. Students benefit from specialized training in public writing, history education initiatives including the UC Irvine History Project for K-12 outreach, and emerging digital humanities resources. The program also encourages cross-disciplinary engagement through campus-wide emphases in Critical Theory, East Asian Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies. With intentionally limited enrollment, the program facilitates strong faculty-student partnerships, enabling customized academic paths aligned with each student's aspirations.
