The Jewish History and Culture program explores the historical and literary heritage of Jewish communities from ancient times to the contemporary era. While students typically concentrate on specific time periods, the curriculum emphasizes comprehensive understanding: all participants must develop foundational knowledge across multiple chronological eras. The program organizes Jewish historical study into five distinct periods: Jewish Interpretations of the Hebrew Bible, Ancient Jewish Civilization, Medieval Jewish Society, Modern Jewish Experience, and Contemporary Jewish Literature. Alternatively, students may opt for thematic concentrations, such as the evolution of Jewish scriptural commentary. Proficiency in classical Hebrew texts is mandatory for program admission. Students collaborate with faculty advisors to design personalized academic paths while ensuring broad familiarity with Jewish cultural development and relevant external disciplines. For instance, those focusing on European Jewish cultural modernity should demonstrate competence in both pre-modern Jewish history and pertinent aspects of European cultural studies.
