The Jewish History and Culture program explores the historical and literary heritage of Jewish communities from ancient times to the contemporary era. While students typically concentrate on specific time periods, the curriculum emphasizes comprehensive understanding: all participants must develop foundational knowledge across multiple chronological eras. The program organizes Jewish historical study into five distinct periods: Jewish Interpretations of the Hebrew Bible, Ancient Jewish Civilization, Medieval Jewish Society, Modern Jewish Experience, and Contemporary Jewish Literature. Alternatively, students may opt for thematic concentrations, such as the evolution of Jewish scriptural commentary. Proficiency in classical Hebrew texts is mandatory for program admission. Students collaborate with faculty advisors to design personalized academic paths while ensuring broad familiarity with Jewish cultural development and relevant external disciplines. For instance, those focusing on European Jewish cultural modernity should demonstrate competence in both pre-modern Jewish history and pertinent aspects of European cultural studies.

Qualification Requirements

GSAS welcomes applications for admission from individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically underrepresented in graduate schools. Applicants are required to upload transcript copies from each college/university they attended into our online application system: official hard copy/paper transcripts are not required at the time of application. All applicants must submit a formal application to the Graduate School, which collates all required materials and forwards the student’s dossier to the Department, where it is evaluated by the faculty. Final decisions on admissions are made by an Admissions Committee, made up by NELC faculty, in consultation with the GSAS dean. Notification of decisions is normally made in mid-March. Admitted students have approximately one month to accept or decline an offer. Applicants who are non-native English speakers and who received their undergraduate degree from an academic institution where English is not the primary language of instruction must prove their English proficiency by earning either a minimum score of 80 on the Internet based test (iBT) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test.
